Election 2020: NPP’s performance not impressive - Obiri Boahen

A leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has described the party’s performance in the just-ended general election as depressing.
According to the deputy general secretary, personally, he wasn’t impressed with the outcome of the polls despite the flagbearer of the NPP winning the presidential race.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Happy FM and monitored by YEN.com.gh, Boahen lamented how the party’s absolute majority in parliamentary vanished in the just-ended election.

He said: “There is a problem. If our parliamentary seats have reduced, will you say we have done well?”
Meanwhile, the NPP has said no amount of “whining” can change President Nana Akufo-Addo’s victory in the just-ended general election.
The chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, declared Akufo-Addo the winner of the presidential race in the Monday, December 7, 2020, election.
The president garnered 51.302% of the valid votes cast to defeat the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama. Mahama collected 47.359% of the ballots.
Mahama rejected the outcome as fundamentally flawed, arguing that the declaration was a clear violation of the law because the commission did not follow the rules set out to conduct the elections.
He, however, noted in a recent interview with VOA that he would only concede after a forensic audit into the results declared by EC was conducted.
Commenting on the developments, the general secretary of the NPP, John Boadu, said the president emphatically won the election. The votes difference between the two candidates is 517, 231 with four percentage points, one of the highest since 1996.
According to Boadu, Ghanaians are at a loss as to how a vote difference of 517,231 can be deemed contentious.
Supporters of the NDC since the declaration of Akufo-Addo, the winner of the elections embarked on a series of demonstrations to express their displeasure over what they said was rigged polls nationwide.
The immediate ex-chairman of the National Peace Council, Most Rev. Emmanuel Asante, warned the NDC it won’t be allowed to jeopardise the peace of the country.
The party, he said must desist from inciting supporters onto the streets and follow the laid down legal channels for the resolution of electoral disputes.
