Ghanaian singer and gospel minister Sonnie Badu has been engaged in a controversy over his claims of having a doctorate degree.

Badu has been holding himself as PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) holder for some time now.
But within the past few days, a man on Twitter alleged that Badu's PhD was fake and that he got the degree from an unaccredited university.

The young man further claimed that his checks revealed that Badu got the PhD, a Masters and Bachelors degree from the unaccredited school within four months.
The guy's allegations about Sonnie Badu has stirred a lot of talk about Ghanaian pastors and how they use honorary titles.
While it is true that a lot of pastors are referred to as doctor just because they have been given honourary titles, there are many others who have earned the title through scholarship.
YEN.com.gh has compiled a list of some of the most famous pastors with doctorate degrees they earned through studies.
1. Bishop Dag Heward-Mills:
The Lighhouse Chapel founder is medical doctor by profession. He graduated from the University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS).
Heward-Mills actually started his ministry while in his fifth year at the UGMS.
2. Lawrence Tetteh:
Renowned televangelist Lawrence Tetteh is an economist who studied at the Budapest Corvinus University of Economics Sciences in Hungary. He did his PhD in International Relations at the University in Hungary.
He also studied at the London School of Economics (LSE) in the United Kingdom.
3. Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante:
A former chairman of the National Peace Council and Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Most Rev Asante is an astute scholar.
He has studied at Christian Service College in Kumasi, London School of Theology in London, the U.K., Ottawa University and Saint Paul University all in Ottawa, Canada.
From his studies, Most Rev Asante holds two Bachelors, a Masters, and a PhD in Theology. He has lectured at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the University of Ghana on part-time basis.
4. Apostle Dr (Professor) Opoku Onyina:
The former chairman of the Church of Pentecost started his ministry in 1976.
In 1998, he obtained a Master of Theology in Applied Theology from Regents Theological College. He later got PhD in Theological Studies from the University of Birmingham in 2002.
In 2016, Onyina who was once the rector of the Pentecost University College was promoted to an associate professor in 2016.
5. Dr Michael Boadi-Nyamekye:
The founder of Maker's House Chapel International holds a bachelor of Management Studies (BMS), MBA, Mphil in Marketing, PhD in Business Administration and PhD in Marketing.
Apart from being a pastor, he lectures at the Graduate School of the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) specifically in Strategic Management, Entrepreneurial Development and Marketing.
