A number of Ghanaians on social media are not in support of a campaign to free actress Akuapem Poloo, born Rosemond Brown, from her 90-day jail term.
On Friday, April 16, 2021, Poloo was sentenced to a 90-day jail term after she pleaded guilty to charges of publishing obscene material with two counts of domestic violence over posting a nude photo of herself and her son in 2020.
Following the sentence, people in Ghana's creative industry started a petition to ask President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to pardon Poloo. The petition currently has over 34,000 signatories including that of rapper Joey B.
A number of comments on YEN.com.gh's Facebook page however show that Ghanaians do not approve of the campaign.
Below is a compilation of some of the comments shared on Facebook.
Ohemaa Gladimorris Senior said: "We have 30,000 people who support stupidity. No wonder we are suffering."
Sam Redeemer also shared his opinion: "This is foolishness..lack of knowledge my people perish, why can't you people understand how the law teaches us a lesson to stop misbehaving...This is the main reason foolishness in leading the destiny of our country into total darkness...The 90 days is not enough, it should be 10 years to be an example, using your beauty to fool... Concert party."
David Quophi retorts: "If they there going to petition for her release then we are going to also do same for all those in jail too...this is Barbaric. Instead of you to use your fame to impact the lives of the youth in a positive way, you are just fooling on social media, polluting the minds of the younger generation."
Aziz Mohammed adds: "Obama can sign, who cares"
In other news about Poloo, Nigerian actress Tonto Dikeh has joined the list of celebrities asking for her to be set free.
In a Facebook post seen by YEN.com.gh, she asked Nigerians to support and show love to Poloo so she can be brought back home.
"In this case, I see no hurt here, Can I take the same picture? No, I couldn't, not even in the next life, but I'm different doesn’t mean the act is Totally wrong..Classless? yes Sir, but Not Bad enough to Go to Jail? No, I don’t think so," reads part of the message posted by Dikeh.
