Davido Speaks on Afrobeats Inaugural Nomination at MTV VMAs: “I Knew We Would Be Global”

Nigerian Superstar Davido has commended the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) for adding the Afrobeats genre to one of the numerous categories

The VMAs took West Africans by surprise after Afrobeats made it this year to the list of the genre-specific category, which includes Latin (2006) and K-pop (2019), rock (1989), alternative (1991), R&B (1993), and pop and hip-hop (both 1999).

Rema won the inaugural ‘Best Aftobeats’ category with his Calm Down remix featuring Selena Gomez.

Speaking on the honourable recognition, Davido noted that he has known for a long time that the West African sound would be accepted internationally.

The DMW boss narrated the making of his viral hit Unavailable and how he had stayed true to his roots despite having several other cultural influences.
