Buying a car at an auction can help Ghanaians secure vehicles at below-normal dealership prices. However, buyers must carefully calculate shipping, duties, auction charges and repair costs before placing a bid.

Several local and international platforms allow people in Ghana to purchase used, repossessed, accident-damaged and government vehicles.

Local vehicle auction options

The Ghana Revenue Authority remains one of the first places buyers should monitor.

Through its Customs Division, the authority periodically announces public auctions involving vehicles and other general goods. Since the vehicles are already in Ghana, buyers avoid international shipping and inland transportation charges.

However, buyers should only follow announcements published on the official GRA website. Individuals claiming they can secretly secure Customs auction vehicles at extremely low prices should be treated with caution.

The United States Embassy in Accra also occasionally lists used official vehicles through the US Department of State’s online auction platform.

Some listings include operational vehicles, while others may have unknown mechanical conditions. Successful bidders may also be required to settle outstanding Customs duties with GRA before collecting their vehicles.

These auctions do not happen regularly, so interested buyers must check for new listings frequently.

Copart is one of the largest online vehicle auction platforms available to Ghanaian buyers. It offers thousands of used, clean-title, repossessed and accident-damaged vehicles from the United States.

Ghanaians can create accounts, upload the required identification and bid directly where permitted.

Copart also provides information for international buyers and supports vehicle export arrangements through shipping companies and freight forwarders.

A vehicle advertised for US$3,000 may become considerably more expensive after auction fees, broker charges, inland transportation, ocean freight, Ghana import duties, clearing charges and repairs are added.

First-time buyers should prioritise run-and-drive vehicles with minor cosmetic, rear or side damage. Flooded, burnt, non-repairable and severely damaged cars may look cheap but can become costly projects.

Checking the vehicle identification number, damage photographs, title status and estimated Ghana clearance cost before bidding can prevent an auction bargain from becoming a financial burden.
