Denmark's Immigration Service has released the complete set of conditions foreign nationals must fulfil to be considered for a permanent residence permit, detailing a two-tier system of basic and supplementary requirements that applicants must navigate.

Every applicant is required to satisfy all 10 basic conditions before their case can advance. Meeting at least two of four supplementary requirements is also mandatory.

Those who clear all four supplementary criteria become eligible after four years of legal residency rather than the usual eight.

The basic conditions cover a broad range of personal, financial, linguistic, and civic criteria. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, still comply with the conditions of their current residence permit, and have lived legally and continuously in Denmark for a minimum of eight years.

Criminal history is also assessed. A sentence of under six months or a suspended sentence leads to a temporary disqualification, while any sentence exceeding six months results in permanent ineligibility. Applicants who are currently charged or indicted for a criminal offence are similarly barred from proceeding.

On financial matters, applicants must carry no overdue public debts and must not have received certain social assistance payments within the four years preceding the application, nor at any point up until a decision is issued on their case.

Language proficiency is a further requirement. Applicants must pass the Danish Language Test 2, known as Prøve i Dansk 2, or a recognised equivalent at the same level or above. They must also sign a declaration of residence and self-support, which forms part of the application form itself.

Employment status at the time of the decision is another determining factor. The condition is met by holding a permanent non-terminated position, being in a temporary role with a substantial remaining period, or operating as self-employed. A final condition bars applicants who deliberately obstructed efforts to verify their identity at any stage of their residence permit application or any subsequent renewal.
