New Zealand Announces Visa Fee Waiver for Three Foreign Categories

  • New Zealand Immigration has confirmed that three specific categories of foreign nationals qualify for full exemptions from visa application fees and immigration levies
  • Beyond individual exemptions, New Zealand also holds bilateral agreements with select countries that waive fees for their citizens
  • Eligible applicants can verify their status using an official tool on the New Zealand Immigration website before submitting any application

New Zealand Immigration has confirmed that three categories of foreign nationals are not required to pay visa application fees or immigration levies when applying to enter or remain in the country.

The exemptions, published by the immigration authority, cover refugees, refugee claimants, and protected persons recognised under New Zealand law, as well as victims of family violence.

All three groups are fully exempt from both the standard visa application fee and the immigration levy that applies to most other applicants.

The first two exempted groups fall under the refugee and protection framework. This includes individuals who have already been formally recognised as refugees or protected persons, as well as those whose refugee claims remain under active consideration by New Zealand authorities.

Victims of family violence form the third qualifying group. Like the others, they are exempt from the full cost of both the application fee and the accompanying immigration levy.

New Zealand also operates bilateral arrangements with a number of countries under which citizens of those nations do not pay visa fees. The specific countries covered depend on the terms of each individual agreement between New Zealand and the relevant home nation.

How to check your eligibility

New Zealand Immigration has directed prospective applicants to use its official Fees, Decision Times and Where to Apply tool to determine whether a waiver applies to their circumstances before lodging an application.

The tool factors in the type of visa being sought, the applicant's nationality, and their personal situation to provide a tailored result.

The authority's guidance makes clear that eligibility is not automatic and that applicants should verify their status through the official channel rather than assuming a waiver will apply.
