Fears Grow Over Dangerous Abandoned Building At Madina, Video Sparks Debate

Residents around School Junction in Madina are calling on government authorities to urgently address concerns over an abandoned four-storey building they say poses a serious threat to public safety.

Their concerns come in the wake of the recent collapse of a three-storey building at Newtown Experimental School in Accra, Newtown, which resulted in casualties and injuries.

According to the residents, the structure appears weak and poorly constructed, raising fears that it could collapse at any time after being left unattended for nearly six years.

In an interview shared on TikTok, a food vendor who operates at the base of the building revealed that objects occasionally fall from the upper floors, posing a danger to passersby and traders in the area.

She recounted a particular incident where a heavy object fell from the top of the building and landed on the roof of a nearby carpenter’s shop. She noted that it was only by sheer luck that no one was injured.

Describing the structure as “a disaster waiting to happen,” the residents have urged authorities to take immediate action. They are calling for either the completion or demolition of the building to prevent a potential tragedy.

Old building collapses at Accra-Newtown

According to the Accra-based Citi FM, a group of eyewitnesses stated that a group of people had gathered inside for worship at the time of the incident.

The incident occurred on Sunday, March 29, at around 1:00 p.m., causing fear and panic among the local community and prompting an urgent rescue response.

Personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) are present at the site to assist in rescuing the victims.

Meanwhile, some residents were seen helping the emergency responders to pull survivors from the rubble.

The full extent of casualties or injuries has not yet been confirmed.

Authorities are expected to launch a full investigation into the cause of the collapse, amid rising concerns over building safety and structural integrity in the area.

Resident recounts how building in Newtown collapsed

Hafiz, a resident of Accra Newtown who witnessed the collapse of the building, told reporters what transpired.

In a Facebook video, he said he and some friends were walking on the street when they heard a loud noise.

He recounted that the area immediately became so dusty that they could not see each other.

However, they could hear each other, so they continued speaking until the dust had cleared.

Hafiz then explained that they moved closer to the scene to ascertain what had happened.

YEN.com.gh also reported that a fire broke out at a plastic factory at Weija Junction and destroyed several raw materials used by the industry.

In a video on social media, the personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were seen fighting the fire to save lives and property.
