Ghana's Highest-Paid Pensioner Earns Over GH¢201K, While the Lowest Receives Just GH¢514

  • The latest data from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has shown a huge disparity in Ghana's pension earnings
  • While the lowest pensioners saw a significant 25% increase in their monthly payments, the top earners' income rose by just 8 per cent
  • This highlighted the ongoing inequality in pension distributions and the different rates of increase applied in the 2025 indexation

The latest National Pensions League Table report released by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has shown how much Ghanaian pensioners earned in January 2025.

According to the data released by SSNIT, the highest-paid Ghanaian pension earner received a monthly payment of GH¢201,792.37 in January 2025.

The data also showed that the lowest pension earner received a paltry GH¢514.41. This means that the top pension earner's income is 392 times higher than the lowest pension beneficiary.

This gap highlights the obvious disparity in pension payments in Ghana. It also highlighted the different rates of increase applied to pensions in the 2025 indexation.

While the lowest-paid pensioners saw a rise of over 25 per cent in their monthly payments, the top earners' income increased by eight per cent.

The highest-paid pensioner, for instance, saw an 8.04 per cent increase, from GH¢186,777.58 in December 2024 to GH¢201,792.37 in January 2025.

However, the lowest-paid pensioner enjoyed a 25.74 per cent rise, from GH¢409.10 to GH¢514.41.

The highest earners receive pensions as high as GH¢58,031.91, while the lowest earners have payments up to GH¢669.54.

This dramatic contrast highlights the vast differences in pre-retirement contributions and earnings that determine SSNIT pension benefits.

The data provides a clear snapshot of the economic inequalities that extend into retirement for Ghanaians dependent on the national pension scheme.

Shake-up at SSNIT as management dismissed

Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh reported that the government had removed Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo as the Director-General of SSNIT.

The contracts of his three deputies were also reportedly terminated. He was appointed by former President Nana Akufo-Addo in 2024.
