Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is tightening his grip on the lead in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race, according to Global InfoAnalytics' latest poll.
Per the poll, 57% of voters prefer Bawumia as the party’s presidential candidate, compared to 29% who are backing former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong.

However, among NPP delegates, Bawumia leads with 47%, while Kennedy Agyapong trails with 17%.
Earlier figures showed that Bawumia previously earned 52% support among NPP delegates, while Agyapong was at 17%.
In comments to YEN.com.gh, the lead researcher at Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwa, cautioned that it was "too early" to call the race. He also noted that the polling among NPP delegates was more critical.
"But more than an 80% chance he (Bawumia) will lead the NPP," Dankwa added.
Former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, is backed by 6%, Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong, polled at 5%, while former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong, registered 3%.
Acheampong and Adutwum received 3% and 1% respectively, with Kwabena Agyapong polling at 1% among NPP delegates.
The survey further indicates that in a potential runoff between Bawumia and Agyapong, the former vice-president would extend his lead to 62% against Agyapong’s 38%
However, 27% of delegates remain undecided, and 4% declined to disclose their preference.
In a runoff scenario within the delegates’ poll, Bawumia commands 49%, compared to Kennedy Agyapong’s 19%, with 27% undecided and 5% declining to disclose.
The NPP gave a window of about six months for preparation for the race after announcing that the primary would be relatively early and take place on January 31, 2026.
Bawumia, who was the party's flagbearer for the 2024 election, retains support from the NPP establishment.
For example, 490 NPP youth organisers declared support for him ahead of the party’s 2026 primaries.
The endorsement, announced at a meeting on July 29, praised his leadership, track record, and vision for Ghana’s future.
This move followed backing from over 200 former MMDCEs and more than 60 NPP MPs, strengthening his flagbearer bid.
Agyapong engaged in unity tour
Coming off the 2024 election, the NPP has been working to mend perceived rifts within the party.
Agyapong, for instance, started a unity tour to help rebuild the party ahead of the primaries.

The outspoken politician said the tour is to heal the NPP family from the grievances many had during the Akufo-Addo government from 2017 to 2025.
In a statement, Agyapong acknowledged the hurt the leadership caused the grassroots and the need to rebuild the party.
“To heal a family, you must first acknowledge the hurt. The NPP is our family. So, I began Day One in Western North by doing just that, asking our grassroots for forgiveness for our shortcomings and mistakes.”
Kennedy Agyapong lobbies NPP delegates for votes
YEN.com.gh reported earlier that Agyapong urged delegates to select him as the party's candidate for the 2028 elections.
During a campaign tour in the Western North Region, Agyapong promised to deliver results within four years.
His passionate appeal generated mixed reactions on social media as the NPP presidential primaries approached.
