Afenyo-Markin Promises Torkornoo Reinstatement if NPP Returns to Power in 2028

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has pledged that former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo will be reinstated to her position if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) wins the 2028 general election.

Afenyo-Markin made the commitment on August 6, 2026, while addressing party supporters at the NPP's "Save the Judiciary" demonstration in Accra.

Speaking directly to Torkornoo, who was present at the rally, he urged her not to be distressed over her removal from office.

"Let me tell the former Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, that she should not be sad. When the NPP returns to power under Bawumia, she will be reinstated as Chief Justice," Afenyo-Markin said.

The MP for Effutu framed the promise within a broader call to action, urging party members to commit fully to reclaiming government at the next election.

"Whether the NDC likes it or not, the NPP will assume power in 2028. If you are an NPP member, work hard so that power returns to the party," he added.

NPP Rallies Behind Sacked Chief Justice

Torkornoo's removal from the office of Chief Justice has drawn significant attention both domestically and internationally, with foreign media outlets reporting on the development as a matter of concern for judicial independence in Ghana.

The "Save the Judiciary" demonstration reflects the NPP's formal opposition to the manner in which Torkornoo's tenure was brought to an end, with the party positioning her case as a rallying point ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Afenyo-Markin's remarks signal that the NPP intends to keep the issue of judicial independence at the centre of its political messaging as it builds towards 2028.

Torkornoo was removed following a recommendation by the committee probing complaints against her. She had been on suspension since April 2025.

The investigative committee found that grounds of stated misbehaviour had been established following its probe.

NPP MPs boycott Chief Justice nominee vetting

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that members of the Minority on the Appointments Committee of Parliament boycotted the vetting of current Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie.

They were upset with the nomination process, which proceeded despite Torkornoo's pending lawsuits.
