Bekwai Court Sentences Cobbler Thomas Opoku to 15 Years for Stealing Infinix phone

The Bekwai Circuit Court in the Ashanti Region has handed a 15-year prison sentence to Thomas Opoku, a 26-year-old cobbler, after finding him guilty of robbing a nursing student at gunpoint in Kokofu Bedoma.

Opoku, also known as Akwasi Dekye, was convicted on Thursday, August 6, 2026, on two counts: Conspiracy to Commit Crime and Robbery, contrary to Sections 23(1) and 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Cobbler allegedly attacks nursing student at midnight

According to the prosecution, Opoku and an accomplice, Agye Nyame, ambushed a student named Divine Adu Boaheng near the Kokofu Nursing Training School at approximately 12:15 am on June 12, 2026, as he made his way back from Bedomaise.

Armed with a single-barrelled gun, the pair robbed Boaheng of an Infinix Smart 6 mobile phone valued at GHC 1,400.00 and GHC 400.00 in cash before fleeing the scene.

A report by Citinewsroom indicated that police apprehended Opoku on 18 June 2026 at Kokofu Lorry Station after Boaheng identified him as one of the perpetrators.

Officers recovered the stolen phone, and Opoku subsequently admitted to the offence in a caution statement.

Presiding Judge His Honour Isaac Appiatu handed down the 15-year custodial sentence following the conviction.

Police confirmed that efforts to locate and arrest the second suspect, Agye Nyame, who remains at large, are continuing.

In a related development, YEN.com.gh reported that Alexander Adusei Gyan, 32, had appeared before the Accra Circuit Court, where he was charged with defrauding by false pretences after allegedly posing as a bank official.

After directing the victim to open an account at a bank branch in Achimota, Gyan had cut off contact and gone into hiding before the police tracked him down.
