Kpando Market Baby Abductor Stella Amedzorme Jailed 3 Years in Volta Region

Stella Amedzorme, a 31-year-old market trader, has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to abducting an eight-month-old baby from the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.

The Kpando Circuit Court handed down the sentence on August 3, 2026.

According to a statement signed by Inspector Felix Kwao, the Volta North Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Citi News reported that the case followed a swift investigation that ended with the child's safe recovery.

The incident began on July 17, 2026, when Gloria Xagbe, a 21-year-old mother, temporarily left her infant son in Amedzorme's care while she stepped away to buy packaging bags.

The two women were acquainted as fellow traders at the market.

When Xagbe returned, neither Amedzorme nor the child was present, prompting her to contact the Police.

Officers acted quickly on intelligence gathered after the report was filed.

By July 18, they had tracked Amedzorme to Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the Oti Region, where she was arrested, and the baby was recovered unharmed.

During questioning, Amedzorme admitted she had taken the child under instructions from her fiancé.

That individual has not been found, and the Volta North Regional Police Command confirmed that efforts to apprehend him remain ongoing.

Court Proceedings and Police Response

Amedzorme made her first appearance before the Kpando Circuit Court on July 20, 2026, and was remanded into police custody.

She returned on August 3, entered a guilty plea, and received the three-year custodial sentence.

"The swift arrest of the suspect and the safe rescue of the child demonstrate our unwavering commitment to protecting lives, especially children, and ensuring perpetrators are brought to justice," the Police said in their statement.

The Volta North Regional Police Command also issued a warning to parents and guardians, urging them to exercise caution when entrusting children to others' care and emphasising that vigilance is essential to prevent similar incidents.

Mamprobi Baby reunited with mother after theft

This troubling incident follows the Mamprobi clinic baby theft from February 17, 2026.

YEN.com.gh reported that the child’s mother had undergone surgery and was reportedly recovering when the unfortunate events at the hospital took place.

After the baby was rescued, he was taken to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for further medical care to ensure everything was in order. After staying in the hospital for close to a week, the baby was discharged.

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, visited the baby and mother before they were discharged. She paid all the infant’s medical bills.

Precious Ankomah, the mother, and the baby returned home to meet excited friends and family members, who sprayed Precious Ankomah with white powder, a sign of victory in Ghanaian culture.
