Afenyo-Markin Fires Back at Nana Yaa Jantuah With Video of Ato Forson in Opposition

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has responded to threats of a formal petition from Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah by sharing a video of Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson raising the same objection during a protest while he served as Minority Leader in opposition.

The dispute stems from the New Patriotic Party's "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration on Thursday, August 6, 2026, during which Jantuah was assigned by the government to receive the NPP's petition at the Presidency.

Afenyo-Markin publicly challenged that decision, arguing that the party had deployed its most senior leadership to deliver the document and was entitled to a reception of equal standing. He reportedly referred to Jantuah as "a nobody" in making his case.

Jantuah threatens to petition Speaker Bagbin

Jantuah appeared on Asempa FM later that Thursday, August 6, 2026, and made clear she considered the remarks a serious affront.

"I am old enough to be your mother. Afenyo-Markin is a small boy in my eyes. Who is he to disrespect me? He should never try that again," she said during the interview.

She also confirmed that a formal petition to Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin was being prepared, in which she would demand that Afenyo-Markin retract his comments.

"I will petition the Speaker for Afenyo-Markin to withdraw what he said. He used to call me 'Senior.' What has changed? I am so mortified. I cannot comprehend what happened," she added.

Afenyo-Markin turns to NDC's own record

Afenyo-Markin offered his reply on Friday, August 7, 2026, posting a video to his Facebook page showing Dr Ato Forson, at the time serving as Minority Leader, questioning the seniority of the official assigned to receive his side's petition during a protest at the Bank of Ghana headquarters.

In a caption directed at his political opponents, the Minority Leader wrote:

:"Just a gentle reminder to my NDC friends. Cc: Nana Yaa Jantuah."

The post appeared intended to draw a direct parallel between his own conduct and that of the current Finance Minister, framing his challenge over Jantuah's designation as consistent with a precedent already set by the NDC while in opposition.

Gbande rejects NPP's petition to Jubilee House

In a related development, YEN.com.gh reported that Mustapha Gbande had publicly rejected the NPP’s petition following the opposition party’s “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration.

Gbande, who also served as NDC Deputy General Secretary, said the government would not be distracted by what he described as politically motivated actions.

The senior official argued that the peaceful nature of the march had demonstrated the strength of Ghana’s constitutional freedoms.
