Antoine Semenyo Scores Against Leeds, Trails Only Palmer and One Player Since January

  • Antoine Semenyo found the back of the net against Leeds United, bringing his brief goal drought to an end for Manchester City
  • Only Cole Palmer and one other player have been involved in more goals than Semenyo since making his debut in January for the Cityzens
  • Netizens quickly took to social media to applaud the Ghana national football team forward for his blistering form in front of goal

Antoine Semenyo kept his red-hot run going on Saturday, February 28, firing Manchester City ahead in their Premier League clash against Leeds United.

The 26-year-old struck in the second minute of first-half stoppage time, calmly finishing from close range after Rayan Ait Nouri picked him out with a clever cutback.

It was a simple touch, but it carried huge importance as it broke the deadlock and set the tone for the afternoon.

Semenyo continues fine form for City

After drawing blanks in his previous two outings, the Ghana international wasted no time reminding everyone why he has been such a revelation since his big-money switch.

His latest strike means that since making his league debut for City on January 17, only Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro have registered more Premier League goal involvements, both with six, compared to Semenyo’s five, according to Squawka.

The effort against Leeds was his 14th in the competition this season. Only Erling Haaland, with 22 and Igor Thiago, with 18, have found the net more often for the club, as cited by the BBC.

In just seven appearances in the English top flight, he has delivered four goals and one assist.

Finishes against Fulham, Tottenham, Wolves and now Leeds underline how quickly he has become a trusted weapon in Pep Guardiola’s title push alongside Arsenal.

EPL title race: Semenyo fires warning shot at Arsenal

Speaking to YEN.com.gh, Hudu reflected on the doubts that initially surrounded the transfer:

“Not everyone was convinced when Man City splashed £65m on Semenyo in January,” he began.
“Yes, he was in red-hot form, but as a case in point to what Jack Grealish went through from Aston Villa to Man City, his trajectory went down although his trophy cabinet was decked with titles.
"A month on, the Ghanaian looks like one of the bargains of the winter transfer window - chipping in with eight direct goal contributions in 11 games across all competitions. Hopefully, he continues on this tangent and spurs City to laurels.”
