Italy miss out on 2026 World Cup
According to Sky Sports, the expanded format ushers in a new era for the competition, creating more room for nations across the globe.
Traditional heavyweights such as Brazil, Argentina, France, England, Spain and Germany had little trouble securing qualification.
Italy, however, failed to make the cut, ESPN reports.
Their last appearance at the World Cup remains 2014, and this latest setback will deepen concerns about the direction of one of Europe’s most decorated football nations.
They fell short in the playoff route, losing on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Elsewhere, the global picture reflects both continuity and change. Established teams are joined by emerging sides eager to make their mark on the biggest stage yet.
Ghana headline Africa’s historic representation
From an African perspective, the 2026 edition marks a milestone. For the first time, 10 teams from the continent will feature at the World Cup, highlighting the region’s growing influence in global football.
Ghana are part of that group, although their preparations have taken a dramatic turn following the recent dismissal of head coach Otto Addo.
DR Congo secured the final African slot in dramatic fashion, edging Jamaica in the intercontinental playoff.
Former Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe struck the decisive goal in extra time to seal their return to the World Cup.
