Mikel hints at Ayew's GFA presidential ambitions
Speaking to journalists, he placed the 36-year-old firmly among the continent's elite and suggested he had the potential to drive meaningful change in local football.
"He's the main man, isn't he? You talk about the legends in Ghanaian football; you talk about Michael Essien and Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan, the guys that I played against.

"Of course, then you talk about Andre [Ayew]; I think he's the top player. I played against him a couple of times, I think.
"But he's a great guy; he's a top player, a great human being. I think if you talk about African football, I think he might be the guy that can bring some changes to Ghanaian football," Mikel said.
Mikel's comments quickly caught the attention of Ghanaian football fans online, with many reading between the lines.

Is Andre Ayew eyeing GFA presidency?
The timing of Mikel's words has added fuel to a fire that has been smouldering for months.
Since the close of the 2025/26 season left Ayew without a club, observers have been closely watching his movements for clues about his next chapter.
The 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup-winning captain has been anything but idle. When the Black Queens staged a boycott ahead of their 2026 WAFCON qualifier against Egypt, Ayew visited the team's base to address the players personally.

He acknowledged the importance of financial security while urging the squad not to allow disputes off the pitch to erode the national pride they had worked hard to build.
The players subsequently returned to preparations for the fixture at the Accra Sports Stadium and won by a landslide margin to qualify for the tournament.
More recently, Ayew made a cash donation to the Black Maidens to lift morale ahead of their FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup qualifying match against Senegal, as cited by Ghanssoccernet.
Though he has not publicly declared any interest in the GFA presidency, his pattern of engagement with national football structures has led many to draw their own conclusions.
Should Ayew choose to enter the race, he would go up against incumbent Kurt Okraku, who currently holds the position of second CAF vice president and is widely expected to seek a third term.
