Germany's military, the Bundeswehr, has opened a door for foreign nationals hoping to work within its defence sector, even without German citizenship.

A guide published by the Bundeswehr on 15 May 2026 outlines three distinct employment categories within the armed forces: military service, civil-service employment, and civilian salaried work.

While German citizenship remains a firm requirement for military service, civilian salaried positions represent a more accessible route for eligible foreigners.

Civilian Roles Open to Foreign Nationals

According to the guide, third-country nationals who hold valid residence permits authorising employment may be considered for civilian salaried positions, provided they satisfy the relevant professional requirements for each role.

The Bundeswehr identified four organisations associated with the military that hire civilian personnel:

  • BWI GmbH - the military's information technology service provider
  • Bw Fuhrparkservice GmbH - responsible for vehicle fleet services
  • Bw Bekleidungsmanagement GmbH - handles clothing management for the armed forces
  • Heeresinstandsetzungslogistik GmbH (HIL) - covers military equipment maintenance and logistics

The guide does not specify which vacancies at these organisations are reserved for foreign nationals, meaning interested applicants are advised to review individual job advertisements and confirm recruitment criteria directly.

Restrictions on Military and Civil-Service Positions

Foreign nationals face considerably tighter restrictions when it comes to military service and civil-service roles.

German citizenship is mandatory for all military career paths, though the guide acknowledges that the law permits exceptions in individual cases where the Federal Ministry of Defence identifies an official need. These exceptions are not presented as a standard route for overseas applicants.

Civil-service employment follows similar rules. European Union citizens and certain equivalent groups may qualify for some exceptions, but third-country nationals are largely excluded from this category under most circumstances.

Civilian salaried employment therefore remains the most realistic option for foreigners seeking to contribute to Germany's defence sector without holding German citizenship.
