The United Kingdom's Home Office opened applications on Wednesday, October 29, 2026, for two new routes designed to provide refugees with safe and legal entry into the country.

Charities can now apply to sponsor refugees through the Named Community Sponsorship scheme and the Refugee Study route, both of which form part of the government's broader effort to establish regulated pathways for refugee arrivals.

What the sponsorship routes require

Organisations that secure approval under the Named Community Sponsorship scheme will carry significant obligations. Successful applicants must arrange suitable accommodation for the refugees they bring over, assist them in settling into local communities, and support them in securing employment.

The Named Community Sponsorship scheme operates under a cap, limiting the total number of refugees who can enter through this particular pathway. The Home Office did not disclose the specific figure that cap is set at, nor did it outline the eligibility criteria charities must satisfy to qualify as sponsors.

The Refugee Study route offers a separate channel, giving refugees access to educational opportunities in the United Kingdom through a structured and regulated framework. As with the sponsorship scheme, charities serve as the designated sponsors under this route rather than individuals or private companies.

Arrivals expected in autumn 2027

The Home Office indicated that the first refugees admitted under either route are not expected to reach the United Kingdom until autumn 2027, leaving a period of roughly a year between the opening of applications and the anticipated start of arrivals.

Both routes are intended to function within a controlled and monitored system, with the government positioning charities as the central actors responsible for managing the welfare and integration of incoming refugees.
