The University of Professional Studies, Accra is an accredited learning institution having satisfied the Accreditation Council Business Schools Practice. The ACBSP is one of the most recognized international accreditation body in the U.S. The UPSA courses offered are among the best in the fields of Business, Accounting and Finance in Ghana.
The university started off as a private professional business education college. In 1978 it was taken over by the Government of Ghana. Over the years has earned a lot of following and has expanded to create room for more courses. As a fast-rising budding university in Ghana, the UPSA courses offered are highly marketable after satisfying the National Accreditation Board of Ghana.
UPSA diploma courses
The UPSA diploma courses usually have a morning and evening classes. The diploma courses offered center around the fields of Business, Finance and Accounting. We have compiled a list of the diploma courses offered and the minimum admission requirements for the diploma programs below:
1. Diploma in accounting
Learners are equipped with the basic skills in the business world. They are also introduced to the common concepts and terms in the accounting field. They are prepared for the advancement into a lower entry levels in an accounting organization. They form the foundation of accounting practices.
The accounting program takes four semesters and after completion learners are awarded with an accreditation certificate recognized by many of the employers. Learners can alternatively use the certificate to advance their learning by undertaking a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting in the institution or any other university in Ghana.
2. Diploma in marketing
The course covers the functional areas of marketing including the aspects of marketing. Learners develop their understanding, knowledge and skills in promotion and marketing. Learners are equipped with procedures and techniques involved in marketing. They also learn how to set up and manage a business through marketing their products and services.
The course is offered in two academic years consisting of four semesters. In the first academic year, learners undertake 10 units while in the second academic year learners take on 10 units. At the end of the second year, it is compulsory for all learners to set up a project. The learners also carry out an attachment process to apply the skills learnt in class into the practical world.
3. Diploma in management
Learners develop a better understanding of the various disciplines that constitute business like Accounting, Finance and Marketing. The knowledge gained from the course will be used in harmonizing the activities of the various departments in the functional areas of the different organizations. They are taught on managerial skills to help them effectively manage resources with the changing management and technological trends.
The course is offered in two academic years making up four semesters. After completing the course and achieving a Diploma Certificate, the learners can advance into a degree program in the university. Graduates with a distinction or credit pass are legible for a 30% upgrade of total credit factors in the degree program.
4. Diploma in public relations management
Prepares learners to be actively involved in the organization relation to the public at different levels. They are equipped with skills to add value to an organization in terms of leadership and managerial skills in carrying out the organization’s programs. Learners are trained to work in the different sectors of the economy either public, private or non-governmental organizations.
The course takes two academic years each constituting four semesters. Each semester constitutes of five units. At the end of the second academic year, learners are tasked with a project which constitutes the final grade. Learners are also attached to organizations to test their prowess under their field of study.
5.Diploma in information technology management
Learners are equipped with skills to control and implement modern information technology into the successful running and operation of an organization. They learn how the role of information technology is applied in the structure and control of the modern environment of the business. They learn to handle implementation of IT-based solutions in businesses and also how to manage technology issues in the organization.
The course is carried out in two academic years rolled into four semesters. A project is part of the course which adds to the final grade. Learners also have to go through an attachment program in one of the leading business organizations in Accra. Learners can advance into a degree program after receiving a certificate upon completion of the course.
UPSA courses and cut off points
For any diploma course for the UPSA admission 2020, learners must have the following minimum admission requirements for a diploma program:
For WASSCE applicants, they must possess a grade in the range A1 to D7 in the following three core subjects including English, Mathematics and Integrated Science. They also must have at least credit passes in the range A1 to C6 in any three elective subjects related to the applicant’s fields of interest.
For SSSCE/GBCE applicants, they must have at least credit passes from grade A to D in three core subjects including English, Mathematics and Integrated Science in addition to credit passes in any of the three elective subjects related to the area of specialization of the applicant.
For the G.C.E Advanced level, applicants must have passes in any two subjects at the G.C.E ‘A’ level plus a general pass in the paper. The applicant must also have in addition credit passes at least Grade 6 in five subjects including English, Mathematics and any Science Subject at the G.C.E ‘O’ level.
UPSA courses and requirements
Below is a list of some of UPSA Undergraduate degree Programs and a brief explanation about what the courses entail.
1.Bachelor of science in accounting
The four-year program provides learners with a foundation in accounting and business. Learners are equipped with skills to help in solving complex accounting and financial problems to demonstrate their grasp and knowledge of the broader environment of business. They will learn various course outlines to improve their analytical and quantitative abilities to cope with the changing business environment.
2.Bachelor of science in banking and finance
Students learn the relationship that exists between banks and finance. They improve their skills and gain knowledge to apply in their professional world. The first two academic years learners are taught the theory part of the course. The last two years of the course takes a research-based project work. Learners go through an attachment process to get assimilated into the beginning of their careers.
3. Bachelor of business administration
Learners are equipped with skills to apply sound business principles and values important in the management of an organization. They also learn the service delivery process in organizations and how some of the challenges in the human resource capacity and development can be alleviated. They also learn how to evaluate accounting concepts and principles in human resource management. They also learn to integrate emerging trends in the business related to IT.
4. Bachelor of science in information technology management
Learners are equipped with modern day software, technical and technological ICT skills applicable in the field of study. Th skills offered are to produce technological practitioners with competitive leadership abilities in the market. It also cultivates positive attitude for the ICT world with the main point of producing learners with the ability to adopt to changes in the field of information technology in the market.
5. Bachelors of arts in public relations management
Learners have the chance to know how to develop marketable company images, write press releases and form communication with the media. The learn how to create and maintain a relationship between the businesses, media outlets and the general community. They also learn on sales promotion, marketing, planning and business communications in order to get a better understanding of their career expectations.
6. Bachelor of science in actuarial science
Students learn how to apply the knowledge of mathematics, probability, statistics and risk theory in real life situations to solve financial problems involving uncertainties in the future. They learn how to predict outcomes related to life insurance, property, pension and casualty insurance. Learner are further equipped with skills to handle financial, administrative and human relations in the business environment.
Admission requirements for undergraduate programs
- For WASSCE applicants, they must have at least credit passes in the grade range A1 to C6. SSSCE/ GBCE applicants must fall under the grade range A-D with three core subjects including English, Mathematics and Integrated Science. In addition, applicants must have three elective subjects with an aggregate score of 24 or better.
- For WAEC General Certificate of Education Advanced level, applicant must have passes in three subjects with any of the passes be a grade D or better at the GCE Advanced level with a plus in the General paper. Applicants must have credit passes (Grade 6) or even better in five subjects including English, Mathematics and any Science subject at the GCE ‘O’ Level.
- For applicants with the Advanced Business Certificate Examination, must have full diploma certificate with passes in five subjects and with two of the passes being a grade D or better. A pass in six subjects including English, Mathematics, Integrated Science in the GBCE, SSSCE or WASSCE is mandatory.
- Post-secondary Teacher’s applicants must have a certificate ‘A’ or a diploma in Education awarded by any of the learning institutions in Ghana that has been accredited by the National Accreditation Board.
- The UPSA course registration also accepts applicants with recognized professional qualifications. Applicants must however possess at least complete Level 1 of any of the following recognized qualifications: ICSA, CIM, CIMA, ACCA, ICAG and CIB only.
- Applicants with a Higher National Diploma with at most Second class (Lower Division) awarded by NABPTEX in the related field of study are also legible for the UPSA online course registration. The applicant however must also have a 2-year post HND qualification working experience.
- For applicants in possession of a university or tertiary diploma with a Final Grade Point Average of at most 2.49 from any learning institution in Ghana accredited by the National Accreditation Board in programs relevant to the field of study offered in the institution.
- For GCSE or Cambridge GCE ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level applicant, must have at least five passes in subjects including English and Mathematics at the GSCE/Cambridge ‘O’ level and three relevant subjects at the ‘A’ level.
Mature applicants for UPSA January admission must satisfy the following requirements;
Attained the minimum required age of 25 years before 1 January. Applicants must provide evidence of age by carrying a birth certificate with at least 5 years old at the time of application. They must also have a three years’ work experience with a letter of appointment from the employer and proof of employment in form of contract or pay slips.
They must also possess at least five passes in five GCE ‘O’ level in subjects including English and Mathematics or in the case of WASSCE or SSSCE/ GBCE holders, at least grade C6 or grade D respectively in five subject including Mathematics and English. They must also pass a Mature Student’s Entrance Examination and a selection interview.
UPSA postgraduate programs
1. MBA in accounting and finance
Learners master the art of managing an organization’s financial and key resources. They develop leadership skills and vast knowledge in financial areas. 8. Master of business administration in internal auditing
Learners are introduced and modules and concepts to audit, investigations to develop their skills to apply in their professional services. They learn first-hand how to handle an organization’s accounts in case finding scenarios to evaluate the expenditure and how it affects to the profit a business realizes. Learners are prepared for Certified Internal Auditor certification to kick start their careers.
The program targets corporate accounting executives, researchers, consultants, partners of audit agencies and qualified graduates with the scope of realizing the objectives of an organization. It also covers the governance process and risk management processes an organization must undertake to accomplish its objectives.

1. Chartered institute of management accountants (CIMA) UK
Learners are introduced to a global organization where they are equipped with skills to make management accounting decisions on the most valued profession worldwide. On completion of the course, the learners are awarded with a Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation, which is recognized worldwide as a show of the holder’s professionalism, business and leadership skills, ethics and commitment.
Learners engage on the basic operations of a business and how they are managed. They learn the importance of cooperation of workers in the workplace and the formulation process of policies in order to accomplish the objectives of the business and organization.
2. Institute of chartered accountants Ghana (ICAG)
Learners are equipped with the relevant skills relating to the accounting profession. They are prepared with a theory driven approach backed with continuous assessment to test the knowledge of the learners. They are introduced to new techniques to cope up with the changing new trends in the accounting profession.
Learners sit two types of examinations; Chartered Accountant (CA) Professional program and the Accounting Technician Scheme, Wes Africa (ATSWA) program meant for students within the region. The learners re tested on their technical knowledge and skills to the accountancy profession.
3. Chartered institute of marketing (CIM)

5. Association of certified chartered accountants (ACCA)
