Jabbawockeez’ history

The initial Jabbawockeez members that formed the group in 2003 are Kevin Brewer, Phil Tayag, and Joe Larot. They adopted ski masks and gloves as a tribute to the 1970s San Francisco strutting crew Medea Sirkas.

Later, the dance group welcomed other members including Gary Kendall and Randy Bernal. These additions made them stronger and more creative. Today, the crew has evolved into something that the founding members never envisioned.

The Jabbawockeez breakthrough was during the first season of the popular show "America's Best Dance Crew in 2008 where they won. They were awarded the winning amount of $100,000.

Kevin is one of the founders of the popular dance group, the Jabbawockeez. He was born in Sacramento, California, meaning that he is 31 years old as of 2020. Kevin started his dancing career in 1995.

One of Kevin's most interesting things is that he is an Apple Certified Technician, which means that he is great at fixing computers. Additionally, he is greatly talented in music production and emceeing.

Joe Larot is 36 years old and was born in Sacramento, California on June 29, 1984. He, together with other crew members Phil Tayag and Kevin Brewer started a dancing band called “The Three Muskees that evolved to the Jabbawockeez.

Today, Joe is the co-owner/board member/creative director of the JBWKZ company. His major roles in the company are business development, brand management, and creating dance moves. Additionally, Joe performs with the main cast of PRISM (Painting Reality in a Spectrum of Movement).

Jeff started dancing at the age of 15 when his best friend introduced him. Later, he started teaching and finally moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dancing passion and build a profound career. Jeff was born on September 15, 1988, and is 32 years old as of 2020. His hometown is Phoenix, Arizona.

Jeff is a dance instructor and dances for a living. He has instructed numerous people and crews that have created great paths for themselves as well. Jeff’s dancing idols are his crew give him great motivation.

She is Ariah Tsukada-Aka that had a great desire to join the dancing group since she was three years old. After witnessing the group dancing on the first season of the American Best Dance Crew, she started studying their movement style.

Fortunately, when she was five years old, Kevin Brewer, one of the Jabbawockeez members, invited her to perform on the ABDC Season six finale. They had earlier met at Tunay Ink Dance Studios in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Brewer was impressed by the girl’s capability of mimicking their dance moves and her debut and recognition earned her the name, Little Babbywockee. She had the following to say after her first performance:

At the end of my first performance with the Jabbawockeez on ‘ABDC,’ it was so exciting to take off my mask and show the world I was a part of the crew.

Which Jabbawockeez member died?

Although the original Jabbawockeez members have tried to stay together since the group's creation, some have unfortunately left through various circumstances. Garry Kendall passed away from meningitis in 2007.

He was the oldest crew member and was responsible for nurturing the dance group's overall success and style. At some point, Paguio, while recognizing Garry’s massive effort and significance to the group, had the following to say:

The Jabbawockeez are 10 members, and one is spiritual. He was the glue that really held us together initially, making sure we didn't lose sight of this unique thing we were creating.

Indeed, the Jabbawockeez members brought a distinct dancing style, although ordinary, but with a new twist. Their dancing synchronization is incredible, and that is why the dance crew is still relevant and growing strong up to date.
