Otto Addo Sacked as Ghana Coach After Austria and Germany Defeats

Ghana have dismissed manager Otto Addo after slipping into crisis just weeks before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Black Stars are set to face Panama, England, and Croatia at the tournament, but Ghanaian authorities acted following a poor run of four consecutive defeats, compounded by their failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations.

The decision leaves the four-time African champions searching for a new head coach with just 79 days remaining before their opening Group L fixture against Panama on June 18.
Ghana were beaten 2–1 by Germany in Stuttgart on Monday night, having earlier suffered a heavy 5–1 loss to Austria on Friday. Those results followed earlier defeats to Japan and South Korea in their November friendlies.
GFA sacks Otto Addo
Following the match in Stuttgart, an emergency meeting was held involving the FA, the Sports Ministry, and the coach, which ultimately led to the decision regarding his future.
In an official statement released on Tuesday morning, the GFA said:
“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately.”
The statement continued:
“The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.”
The GFA also indicated that a new technical direction for the Black Stars will be announced in due course.
Ghana are scheduled to face Mexico and Wales in May as part of their final preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in North America in June and July.

Addo was on his second spell as coach of the team after Borussia Dortmund agreed to release him from his role in talent development at the end of the season in March 2024.
Addo already coached Ghana on an interim basis for much of 2022, including at the World Cup in Qatar, when Ghana beat South Korea but was still eliminated in the group stage.
During his playing career, the Hamburg, Germany-born Addo won the Bundesliga with Dortmund and played for Ghana at the 2006 World Cup.
