With over a million people in the Western Region, the absence of an ICU has been a long-standing issue, leaving many families in distress during medical emergencies.

At a recent press conference held on 3rd September, 2025, in Sekondi, Western Region, Minister Nelson took a personal stand by pledging GH¢100,000 from his own resources.

He said:

“Healthcare is universal. Everybody needs it. As the leader in this region, I felt it was my responsibility to lead this effort; this isn’t just about me; it's about ensuring we provide essential services for our people”, he passionately stated."

Joseph Nelson's call to action resonated, urging corporate entities and individuals to join in this vital mission for the community.

Dr. George Peprah, the Medical Superintendent of the Takoradi Hospital, stressed the critical nature of the ICU:

“The ICU is a lifeline for critically ill patients. It’s where we care for those who can’t breathe on their own, stroke victims, or those facing organ failures. Without this facility, placing these patients in general wards increases the risk of losing them.”

He shared that the hospital has already earmarked a female ward for the ICU. With some minor renovations and necessary equipment, he is hopeful that the ICU could be operational by the end of 2025, provided the funds are secured soon.

He added that some selected staff members are on standby to be sent to Accra for training on how to operate the machines to be secured for the ICU.

Rebecca Akufo-Addo builds ultra-modern Paediatric ICU

Previously, YEN.com.gh shared beautiful pictures of an ultra-modern Paediatric & Neonatal Intensive Care Unit built by Ghana's former First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo.

The facility consists of a 21-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and a 20-bed Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), constructed under the patronage of the Rebecca Foundation.

This development followed public outrage over a recommendation by the emoluments committee to place the wives of former President Nana Akufo-Addo and ex-Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on monthly salaries.
