A Danish-owned Liberian-flagged oil tanker was boarded by pirates over the weekend in the Gulf of Guinea, the owner said Tuesday, adding that contact with the 16 crew members had been lost. The shipowner added that the crew had sought refuge in the tanker's citadel when the pirates boarded, "in accordance with the onboard anti-piracy emergency protocol".

French authorities raided five banks on Tuesday as part of an investigation into suspected cases of massive tax fraud and money laundering, prosecutors said. The raids follow five preliminary investigations that were opened in December 2021 in connection with suspected money laundering and aggravated suspected tax fraud related to dividend payments, the statement said.

The 27 EU member states gave final approval Tuesday to a ban on sales of new fossil fuel cars by 2035, after Germany dropped a last-minute blocking effort. But manufacturers in Germany, one of the world's largest vehicle-producing nations, said the fuels could allow combustion engines to be used beyond 2035.
