US Announces Embassy Job Openings With $120K Annual Pay, Details on Eligibility Emerge

The US Department of State has announced that it is seeking the services of Arabic, Chinese-Mandarin, Portuguese, or Spanish speakers.

In a Facebook post, the agency announced that it is hiring Consular Fellows to work at certain embassies overseas.

On the website of the Department of State, it was stated that applicants must be U.S. citizens and ready to work outside the United States.

It also added that U.S. citizen candidates with dual nationality are ineligible for assignment within their country of dual nationality.

It further stated that applicants eligible for the position must first undergo a thorough background check.

Additionally, they must also pass a health check to ensure they are physically and mentally prepared for the task ahead.

Applicants must also be 20 years old at the time of application and 21 years old when officially starting the job.

The website disclosed that there is no minimum education requirement for the role.

The salary for the position is $59,726 – $121,080 per year, which is equivalent to ₵597,260 – ₵1,210,800.

Persons eager to work as Consular Fellows can apply, as applications run from May 1, 2026, to September 30, 2026.

At the time of writing, the Facebook post by the US State Department, which had over 1,000 likes and 100 comments, was captioned:

“Do you speak Arabic, Chinese-Mandarin, Portuguese, or Spanish? Your skills can help protect Americans and uphold our nation’s immigration laws abroad. The U.S. Department of State is hiring Consular Fellows to represent the United States at our embassies and consulates overseas, to protect American citizens and ensure that only qualified, vetted travelers receive U.S. visas. If you want to put your language abilities to work for America, defending our citizens, our borders, and the privilege of U.S. travel, this is your opportunity.”

Reactions to US announcing job vacancies

Netizens who took to the comment section of the post have shared varied opinions on the job vacancies announced by the US Department of State.

Joudi M Henoud stated:

“Dialects are very important. For example, Arabic has at least 23 different dialects. The easiest of these are Lebanese and Syrian Arabic.”

Marial Moreno added:

“If a candidate is already overseas, are they still able to apply for the country they’re in? And where can they take the exam if it’s not offered in the same country?”

Caroline Bortolon said:

US Embassy transitions to new website

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that the US Embassy in Accra had moved to a new visa services provider.

The move marked the end of access to the previous website and services
