Thailand School Incident Leaves 6 Students and Teachers Dead, Teen Suspect Dies

A 14-year-old student shot and killed at least six people at a school on the outskirts of Bangkok on Friday, August 7, 2026, before turning the weapon on himself, in what police described as Thailand's deadliest mass killing since 2022.

The attack at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, located on the northwestern edge of the Thai capital, came after the teenage suspect had already shot and killed his grandparents earlier that morning.

Reports by Reuters indicated that the Police have confirmed the gun used in the attack belonged to his grandfather. Officers said the boy fired at least 26 bullets during the rampage and was found with 34 additional rounds on his person when emergency responders reached him.

Fifteen other people sustained injuries.

Chaos and casualties at Debsirin Nonthaburi School

Emergency worker Kiatikhun Verapongpradith, 47, told reporters he arrived while the shooting was still ongoing.

His team treated students with wounds to their backs, chests and arms.

On an upper floor, they discovered a male teacher who had died, and in a separate room, a female teacher with injuries to her chest and arm.

After hearing a final gunshot, responders rushed upstairs and found the suspect had shot himself in the head.

He still had a pulse when they reached him, and responders administered CPR before transporting him to the hospital, where he later died.

Education Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong confirmed that both teachers and students were among those killed and injured.

The school, which had an enrolment of approximately 3,100 students and 147 teachers during the 2025 academic year, descended into chaos as pupils fled while teachers embraced one another in tears outside.

An 18-year-old student who witnessed the incident said he initially mistook the gunshots for firecrackers.

"I didn't think it was a gun at first," he said.

"There were many shots: bang bang bang. Then it went quiet. Then it started again."

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed grief over the tragedy.

"This is terrible for something like this to happen," he told reporters.

"I'm sad for those who died and sad for something like this to happen in our country."

Thailand's history of gun violence

The attack is the second school shooting in Thailand in 2026 alone, following a February incident in the south of the country where a teacher was killed and a student injured.

Gun ownership is widespread in Thailand, with an estimated 10.3 million firearms in civilian hands, the highest rate in Southeast Asia at roughly 15 guns per 100 residents, according to a 2017 Small Arms Survey estimate.

The country has experienced several mass shootings in recent years, including a 2022 attack in which a former police officer killed 36 people, among them 22 children at a daycare centre, and a 2020 rampage in Nakhon Ratchasima that claimed 29 lives.

20 pupils die in school bus crash

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that at least 20 pupils and one adult have died after a school bus carrying children from King David Junior School in Kampala crashed in eastern Uganda on Thursday evening, July 16, 2025.

The Uganda Police Force confirmed the deaths following the accident in Chekwatit Village, Kimawa Parish, Kawowo Sub-county, Kapchorwa District.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after receiving a report of the crash at around 8 pm.
