Sarah Hodgson learnt what had happened not from the company responsible, but from a neighbour who rang to ask whether she had authorised anyone to tear down the vacant property in southwest Atlanta.
"I said no, and she said, well, there's someone over here who just demolished the entire house and tore it all down," Hodgson recalled.
The startled neighbour stepped outside to challenge the workers directly, only to be told to mind her own business.
A family member rushed to the property and presented the site supervisor with a permit, at which point the crew acknowledged they had torn down the wrong house.
Rather than offering any immediate remedy, the workers packed up their equipment and reportedly drove away, leaving the site in ruins.
Although the property had sat vacant and boarded up for roughly 15 years, Hodgson stressed that the lawn was kept tidy and all property taxes were fully paid and up to date.
She also raised safety concerns about whether gas or water lines beneath the structure had been ruptured during the demolition.
"How do people just go up and tear somebody's property down and then just drive off? How can they think that's OK?" she said.
Hodgson turns to legal counsel after demolition
The company behind the error, You Call It We Haul It, had not reached out to Hodgson by the time the story was reported by the New York Post.

She has since filed a police report and sought legal counsel.
"I think he owes us an apology, and he needs to fix the problem. He needs to fix the problem," Hodgson said, making clear that a simple acknowledgement of fault would not be sufficient.
You Call It We Haul It released a statement saying they are working to resolve the matter, though no further details were offered on how they intend to make good on the destruction of the property.
Outcry as 70-year-old historic structure is demolished
YEN.com.gh earlier reported that a long-running dispute over the future of Tendamba Primary School in Wa came to an end after the facility was demolished to pave the way for the construction of the Wa Municipal segment of the government's proposed 24-hour economy market.
The demolition was carried out in the early hours of Saturday, June 13, 2026, following months of disagreements among stakeholders, legal action and mediation efforts led by traditional authorities.
Critics argued that the school, established in 1956, was an important part of the area's history and educational heritage.
