"If Akwatia Votes Against NDC, and I Were the President, I Won’t Fix Their Roads": Collins Dauda

  • Collins Dauda has sparked outrage after suggesting Akwatia may be denied development if voters reject the NDC candidate
  • The Asutifi South MP told residents that the NDC government under President Mahama would fix their roads if they voted for Bernard Bediako
  • Many Ghanaians online criticised the comments as political coercion and a threat to fair development access

The Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Collins Dauda, has caused public outrage after he subtly threatened to stifle development in Akwatia if the residents vote against the parliamentary candidate of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the ongoing by-election.

The experienced legislator, who has been serving his people since 1993, stated that the NDC government, led by President John Mahama, is committed to repairing the roads in Akwatia.

However, he said the residents must vote for the party's candidate, Bernard Bediako.

"Akwatia roads, we will fix them, but we want them to reciprocate this by voting for the NDC candidate," he said.

When asked by the Joy News reporter whether in the event the people of Akwatia voted for the NPP, the government would deny them roads, Collins Dauda said he could not say that.

"I can't say that. I'm not the president, but if I were the president, I wouldn't do it. You have the opportunity... President Mahama is now the President of Ghana. He's in charge of everything. So, if it's development you want, it's his direction we must go,"
So, if you are a native of Akwatia and a voter in Akwatia, and you want development, and you know it's the president who is in charge of development, who will you vote for?" This is a special election. It's not the general election."

The Asutifi South MP, who is also the former Minister for Works and Housing, made these comments while on election monitoring duties for the NDC at Akwatia.
