The senator said his exit followed weeks of deliberate consultations with supporters, stakeholders, and constituents across Kwara Central, as well as other concerned residents of the state.
He was emphatic that the decision was carefully considered rather than impulsive.
"My political decisions have always been guided by my belief that politics should be centred on people, principles and purpose," Mustapha wrote in the letter. He added that he had engaged all relevant stakeholders before arriving at his final position.
In spite of his departure, Mustapha took time to acknowledge President Bola Tinubu and the national APC leadership, expressing gratitude for the relationships and opportunities he had gained during his years with the party.
Political realignments in Kwara State
Mustapha's resignation is the latest indication of deepening tensions within the APC's Kwara chapter.
He had previously been identified as a prominent voice within the G15/TOP group, a faction of aggrieved APC stakeholders in the state who have openly challenged the current direction of the party's leadership there.
Having been originally elected to the Senate on the APC platform, his exit carries considerable weight as politicians across Kwara begin repositioning themselves with one eye on the 2027 electoral cycle.
