The clarification followed a written parliamentary question tabled in April 2026.
According to the response, the Royal Navy and the British Army both accept applications from eligible foreign nationals with no prior UK residency requirement.
The Royal Air Force sets a higher bar, typically requiring candidates to have resided in the country for between five and ten years before they can apply.
UK military: Who qualifies to apply
Eligibility extends across several categories, covering British Citizens, British Overseas Citizens, British Overseas Territory Citizens, British National (Overseas) Citizens, British Protected Persons, British Subjects, Irish Citizens, and citizens of Commonwealth member countries. Dual nationals who hold any of these nationalities alongside another also qualify.
Commonwealth nations covered by the arrangement include Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea, among others.
For Ghanaians, Nigerians, and other Africans holding Commonwealth nationality, this represents a tangible route into British military service.
A separate and distinct arrangement exists for the British Army's Brigade of Gurkhas, which recruits specifically from Nepal.
UK army: Vetting and government's position
Regardless of branch or nationality, all recruits joining the UK Armed Forces must pass through the National Security Vetting process, which is administered by the Cabinet Office. This applies universally across the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force.
The parliamentary response also made clear that the government has no current plans to revise the nationality or residency rules governing eligibility in any of the three branches. Commonwealth nationals therefore remain the broadest category of foreign citizens with an existing, official pathway into British military service.
It is worth noting that the British Army's general application window for Commonwealth residents was separately reported to be closed at the time of writing, with only one specific group of candidates still permitted to submit applications.
