Eugene Kwame Marto, popularly known as Kuami Eugene, is a Ghanaian singer and songwriter known for his hit music, Angela (2017). Born on 1 February 1997, he is a fast-rising highlife, afrobeat, and afro-pop singer whose rise to fame began through a talent show in his home country. Since 2016, he has been releasing songs that many people of his generation have been identifying with. This move has earned him accolades in the Ghanaian music industry.

1. He once dropped out of school

Kuami Eugene dropped out of school at some point as he wanted to focus on what he loves most -music. He went to a studio in the Eastern Region, for about 2 months, to study music. Eugene took that bold step even without informing his parents or the school authority.

As it is the norm in most Ghanaian schools, the institution made him a day student once they realised he had skipped his studies deliberately. The school’s photographer captured him when he had gone to perform at a festival. At that time, he was a second-year student.

Which school did Kuami Eugene attend? Kuami Eugine attended the Salvation Army Senior High School. The learning institution is in Akim-Wenchi, Kwaebibirem District, Eastern Region, South Ghana.

However, after the school’s authority made him a day scholar, his mother changed institutions and enrolled him at a different one in Accra. She did that to keep an eye on him because he loved music more than education.

Where is Kuami Eugene from? Kuami Eugene grew up in Fadama, a suburb of Accra in Ghana. Fadama is one of the most populated slums in the country characterised by high levels of poverty. Since gaining his celebrity status, he has visited his childhood home on several occasions. The singer has even held a concert in the area to entertain his people.

2. He graduated from university

Despite rumours suggesting that he had dropped out of high school, Kuami Eugine continued with his education in Accra and proceeded to join the university. He furthered his education to Ghana Telecom University. It is from his experiences at the university that shaped his love for music.

3. He finished third in MTN Hitmaker

MTN Hitmaker is one of the most popular reality television shows in Ghana. It is a music TV show that has brought forth some of the hottest acts in Ghana, including the likes of Kidi and Kurlsongz, and many others like Lasmid popular.

After finishing third in the MTN Hitmaker competition, Lynx Entertainment signed Kuami Eugene to its record label. Lynx Entertainment has been responsible for launching the careers of some of the top musicians in Ghana successfully. Some of these include Richie, Zigi, MzVee, KiDi, DopeNation.

Since joining the company in 2016, Kuami Eugene has released one album and several singles. When the Lynx Entertainment produced Angela in 2017, the song was the fastest to reach one million views on YouTube and the most of any artist on the label at that time.

5. Kuami Eugene only has two albums

The Ghanaian singer has not released many albums since he first signed for Lynx Entertainment. As of October 2020, there are only two Kuami Eugene albums. He released his first one in 2018 and named it Rockstar. The album has 13 songs, including Angela and Confusion.

In 2020, he released his second album named Son of Africa. The album has 14 songs, including Show Body and Marry Me. A noticeable difference between the two is that Son of Africa features some of the top artists in Ghanaian and African music. These include Shatta Wale, Nigeria’s Zlatan, and Uganda’s Eddy Kenzo, among others.

6. Kuami Eugene has won 17 awards since 2018

Despite releasing many singles, only two songs have won him an award. The two Kuami Eugene songs that have scooped the award are:

  • Wish Me Well: 2019 3Music Awards and Ghana Music Awards UK Highlife Song of the Year.
  • Obiaato: 2020 3Music Awards Highlife Artiste of the Year.

Surprisingly, his hit song, Angela, has never won an award but has received many nominations.
