History of Berekum College of Education

Berekum College of Education was established in February 1953. Nana Yiadom Owusu II, who facilitated the foundation of Berekum College, was the then Omanhene of the Berekum traditional government. He provided a 42-hectare piece of land where the college is currently situated. Berekum College started by offering 2-year certificate B program until in 1961 when it upgraded to offer a 4-year certificate A program. Berekum College of Education was officially accredited to offer a diploma program in 2007. The institution is celebrated to have released more than 80,000 teachers who have successfully ventured into various fields including civil service, politics, and law among other prominent careers. It has also undergone several changes and introduced new programs to become more competitive.

Berekum College of Education courses

Courses offered at Berekum College of Education are career and knowledge oriented. This is probably the key reason behind the prominence and competitiveness of Berekum College in Ghana. Currently, the college offers diploma courses and four-year degree courses on education. Under the degree program, the students are required to stay on campus for three-years for academic and professional skills. The last one year is an off-campus program, which is meant to expose the student to the working environment (teaching practice). This program is commonly known as the in-in-out. The courses offered in both categories are as follows:

Bachelor of Education programs

  • Bachelor of Education (Primary education)
  • Bachelor of Education (History and Geography)
  • Bachelor of Education (ICT and Mathematics)
  • Bachelor of Education (English and Ghanaian language)
  • Bachelor of Education (RME and Music)

Diploma courses

  • Diploma in primary education. It is offered for 3 years on a regular basis
  • Diploma in primary education. Offered for 2 years on a regular basis
  • Untrained teacher diploma in primary education. Offered for 4 years

Fees charged at Berekum College of Education

Berekum College of Education school fees are favourable to all students who get the opportunity to study at the college. However, the college has a right to change the existing fee structure with the approval of the government. The concerned department of the college has not released the latest fee structure for 2018/2019, which may or may not differ with the 2017/2018 fee structure. Given below is a guide of the fees charged based on the 2017/2018 fee schedule. The details are as follows:

Level 100

A student will be required to pay GHC 1500 admission fees, GHC 200 SRC charges and GHC 100 hall dues. These charges apply once per year. On top of that, students are supposed to pay GHC 360 for UCC examination. Examination fees are paid every semester.

Level 200

Students are supposed to pay GHC 1164, which includes SRC charges GHC 100, Hall dues GH 100 and examination fee of GH C360.

Level 300

Students are supposed to pay GHC 788 for the whole year. This amount will include hall project charges of GHC 50 and examination fees of GHC 270.

Berekum College of Education admission requires the candidates to have certified several academic qualifications. For a student to be admitted to pursue a degree in education, he or she must have the following minimum qualifications:

WASSCE holders

Applicants must have credit (A1-C6) in at least six (6) subjects. These should include core Mathematics and English language with three (3) elective subjects, which are relevant to the course of study.

SSSCE holder

Applicants for this category must have credit (A-D) in at least six (6) subjects in the following combinations; three (3) core subjects including Mathematics and English language and three (3) elective subjects which are relevant to the course in question.

TVET holders

Candidates holding TVET qualifications, and are willing to pursue a degree in education should have credits in at least three(3) core subjects; core Mathematics and English language compulsory, and passes in three (3) elective subjects which are relevant to the course which the applicant is interested in.

Students waiting for May/June NABPTEX or the WASSCE results are also encouraged to apply.

There are also specific course option requirements, which are critical for admission to study the specific courses. Some of these qualifications and requirements are as follows:

Bachelor of Education in general with specialization in primary and junior high school

  • WASSCE applicants who want admission to pursue this course must have credit (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects as follow; three (3) core subjects including English language and core Mathematics and three (3) elective subject relevant to this course.
  • SSSCE applicants who want to secure admission to pursue this course must have credit (A-D) in six (6) subjects distributed as follow; three core subjects including mathematics and English language and three (3) elective subjects, which are relevant to the course.

  • WASSCE applicants who want to pursue this course must have credit (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects as follows; three (3) core subjects inclusive of core Mathematics and English language and three (3) elective subjects which are relevant to this course.
  • SSSCE holders who want to pursue this course must have credit (A-D) in six (6) subjects distributed as follow; three (3) core subjects including Mathematics and English language and three (3) elective subjects, which are relevant to the course.

Bachelor of Education in French

  • WASSCE holders who want to pursue this course must have credit (A1-C6) in six subjects as follows; three (3) core subjects including core Mathematics and English language and three (3) elective subjects including French.

Bachelor of Education in Technical/ Vocational Training

  • WASSCE and SSSCE holders applying for admission to pursue this course must have credits in three core subjects; Core Mathematics and English language and three (3) elective subjects related to the vocational/technical course.

How to apply to Berekum College of Education

Qualified candidates who certify all qualifications can apply for admission into the Berekum College of Education. The procedure of applying is quite simple and is mainly based online. The procedure for the online application is as follows:

  1. All applicants will be required to pay GHC 150 application fees to Ghana Colleges of Education account at any branch of uniBank ltd Ghana.
  2. Any additional payment that the candidate may be asked to pay can be paid via mobile money wallet through Airtel money, MTN mobile money or Tigo cash by dialling *924*8#.
  3. After payment of all required charges, the applicant will be given the following information:

  • Application admission serial number
  • Personal identification number (PIN)
  • Address of the admission website

4. The applicants will then be required to apply by visiting coeportal.edu.gh and follow the procedure to fill in the details required before they submit. Official names and honest information should be given when filling the form. After completing the online application form, the candidate will also be expected to print a hard copy. The hard copy should have attached, a passport size photo and results slip, then sent to Berekum College of Education. It should be addressed to the principal. Applicants should remember that incomplete forms will not be processed.

Applicants will be notified of receipts of their payments with a text message. It is therefore essential to ensure that the applicant gives reliable contacts. Applicants who will be given a chance at the college will be notified by SMS. Those who will not get notifications should assume that their applications were not successful.
