These individuals are not required to demonstrate English proficiency.

2. The "55/15" exception

The second category, referred to as the "55/15" exception, applies to applicants who are 55 or older at the time of filing and have maintained permanent residency for at least 15 years.

They also qualify for the English language waiver under the same terms.

Importantly, both groups are still required to complete the civics test.

However, they may take it in their native language, provided they bring an interpreter to the interview who is fluent in both English and their chosen language.
