Before the 2012 election, Darko-Opoku, who contested on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), said her compound was a constant hive of activity.

Constituents regularly arrived at her gate as early as 4:30 a.m. seeking assistance, and she often borrowed money to meet those demands when her own resources ran dry.

The morning following her defeat, however, told a completely different story.

"When we lost the 2012 election, at a point in time, we couldn't buy prepaid credit for the house because there was no money. And on the day we lost that election, I woke up in the morning, drew my curtains, and realised that there was nobody at the gate. Ordinarily, by 4:30 a.m., my gate is full."
She added: "They come with all sorts of stories, and I had to help. When I didn't have, I had to borrow to help. But when I lost the election and I woke up that morning, there was nobody there. That is life."
