The British Army has set out the nationality requirements that determine which foreign nationals are eligible to enlist, confirming on its official recruitment website that the application window for Commonwealth citizens residing outside the United Kingdom is currently shut.

The only active pathway for overseas Commonwealth applicants at this time is for those seeking to join as musicians.

Who is eligible to join British Army

According to the published guidance, all applicants must hold British or Irish nationality, or be a Commonwealth citizen.

The Commonwealth comprises 56 member states, the majority of which were formerly part of the British Empire, spanning Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, the Americas, Europe and the Pacific. Member countries include Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Australia, Canada and Jamaica, among others.

The Army listed four categories of foreign nationals who may qualify: Commonwealth citizens resident in the United Kingdom; Commonwealth citizens resident outside the United Kingdom, subject to the application window being open; Irish nationals; and nationals of other countries, who may be considered in exceptional circumstances under specific eligibility criteria.

What applicants from 2024 window should know

The Army noted that the volume of applications received during the 2024 recruitment window was unprecedented and that processing remains ongoing.

Candidates who applied during that period and secured a Recruit Bounty Scheme sponsor remain active in the system. Those who submitted applications without a sponsor will have their applications rejected.

The Army advised all candidates against contacting recruitment offices directly to chase updates, instead directing them to monitor their online portals for notifications on next steps.

"Commonwealth soldiers are, and always will be, an important and valued part of the fabric of the British Army," the service said in its published guidance, expressing gratitude to all Commonwealth candidates and their sponsors for their patience and commitment.
