About Akatsi College of Education
Akatsi College of Education is commonly known by its nickname AKATSICO. It is a teacher training college in Ghana. The college is located in the Volta region of Ghana, Akatsi. The college commenced as the Akatsi Training College, which was established on October 1st, 1963. It was, however, officially opened on October 25th the same year. During its opening, the college constituted of only 42 male students and about 4 teachers.
In the period that the college was established, the Ghanaian government, had the intention of increasing the number of teachers in the country. This was achieved by setting up more College Education centers. Among the centers established were at, Akatsi, Anloga, Ho, Dzodze, Shia, and Dabala.
The 42 male students admitted into the college were mostly, staff of the work brigade who decided to be trained as teachers. The number increased to 54 by the October 28th. The academic year of 1967/68 brought fruits of good fortune to the institution as 24 female students were registered into the institution and that marked the genesis of the Akatsi College of Education being co-educational. The college has since remained to be co-educational till this very day.
Akatsi Education College has run various programs since its establishment. It started with post middle program certificate ‘A’ (4 years). It was the only program until the year, 1974 when the Agriculture Specialist (2 years) course was introduced. The course was however halted to pave the way for a 3 years post-secondary program in 1975.
The year 1978, brought with it the suspension of the 4-year program after the last group of students passed out. A 4-year program was re-introduced in 1981 as a modular program. It was divided into 2 years of sandwich vocational courses and 2 years of regular college tuition ‘A.' In the end, all programs except the 3 years Post-secondary education were abolished.
Something to note, however, is that Akatsi College of education faced a mild of challenges during its establishment. Two vivid limitations came in the form of water and electricity. The first batch of students had to travel long distances in search of water. Some went as far as the dam outside Akatsi trekking to bring water to the institution for general use. Akatsi College of Education is one college which offers technical and science courses.
The academic year 2018/19 marked the beginning of Colleges of Education in Ghana offering Bachelors of Education degree programs. Applicants can apply to study for a B.Ed. at Akatsi College of Education.
