The two held 15 minutes heated argument, after which she pulled the trigger and shot her in the head twice. She went back to the car and drove off. Luckily, her neighbours called for an ambulance, and she was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors managed to save her life.
After regaining consciousness, Mary Buttafuoco recognized Amy from a picture. She was arrested and charged with attempted murder. On 23rd September 1992, she accepted a plea bargain and pleaded guilty to first-degree assault.
Imprisonment
On 2nd December 1992, she was sentenced to 5 to 15 years imprisonment at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. After serving her term for seven years, the Nassau County Court Judge granted her parole. As a result, her period was shortened to a maximum of ten years.
According to the judge, the author was not appropriately represented during the 1992 guilty plea. Therefore, she was immediately eligible for parole. Later, the author sued Joey for rape.
The case was re-opened after the author accused him of rape in February 1993. She testified against him and also offered hotel receipts as part of the evidence. He was charged with statutory rape since she was 16 years old at that time. In October 1993, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four months in prison.
