Asia-Pacific stocks fell in early trade on Thursday as the Covid surge in China cast a shadow over markets across the region. The United States, Japan and Italy have imposed restrictions on visitors from China, and a senior US official warned that the surge increases the potential for new Covid variants to emerge.

A group of countries led by Canada on Wednesday called for an arbitrator to settle claims against Iran over its shooting down of a Ukrainian passenger plane in January 2020. The group of countries led by Canada accuses Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of having "launched unlawfully and intentionally" two surface-to-air missiles at the jetliner.
