Popular Ghanaian media personality Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, has left many people in disbelief following his unexpected announcement on his birthday.

The ace broadcaster, who celebrated his birthday today, May 5, 2025, announced on his show Onua Maakye on Onua TV that he was taking a break from work.

The outspoken presenter, who was not emphatic as to whether he was leaving Media General for good, said and worked with competent colleagues and had no issue taking a break from his work because he knew they were qualified.

“I am taking a break. I don’t know when I am coming back. I may come back, I may not come back. I am done.
I thank everybody I have worked with in the house – from the camera people to technical to sales. All of you have been so good and kind to me. I’ve done my part. By the grace of God and the people we hired, I think JB can continue, Tagor can continue. That’s why I brought JB. By the grace of God, we will meet somewhere.”
“Anytime you are given a task, do it diligently. Quit when the applause is loud. I want you to miss me, so I am done. JB can continue, he can do a very good job. I would provide whatever information to lead you into the new Ghana” he stated.

Captain Smart then singled out his followers for praise and thanked them for their support over the years.

“I must thank you and say I love you, for being with me from 1st June 2001 to 5th May 2025. I left Angel FM on 5th May. I left on my birthday. I am out. God bless you.” he said.

Captain Smart reflects on his time at Media General

Captain Smart expressed gratitude to the Group Chief Executive of Media General Ghana, Beatrice Agyemang, and the company's lawyer, Sena Edekor.

He also thanked his colleagues who made his stay at Media General a success.

Journalistic career of Captain Smart

Captain Smart's journalism career began in 2002 at Kumasi-based radio station Fox FM

He also worked with Otec FM and Kesewa Radio, both based in Kumasi, before he joined Adom FM, a subsidiary of Multimedia Group Limited, in 2013.

At Adom FM, he charmed his listeners with his charisma as the morning show host of Dwaso Nsem, where he was vocal on corruption-related issues.

After seven years at Multimedia Group Limited, Captain Smart resigned in 2020.

Shortly after his exit from Multimedia, Angel Broadcasting Network (ABN) announced that Captain Smart had joined the company in May 2020.

At ABN, where he worked as the morning show host of Anopa Bofuo, but faced internal challenges and was temporarily suspended, leading to his resignation.

After leaving ABN, Captain Smart joined Onua TV, a subsidiary of Media General, in June 2021, where he hosted the morning show Onua Maakye.

Captain Smart demands a ban on telenovela

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Captain Smart stoked controversy after he called for a ban on telenovas on all local television stations.

He went on to call out his employers, Onua TV, along with prominent stations like Adom TV and UTV, for making telenovelas a major part of their daily programming.

Captain Smart said the time had come for Ghana to prioritise and promote local movies.
