The government has closed the recruitment portal for teachers after over 40,000 people applied.

The Ghana Education Service was targeting the recruitment of 7,000 teachers.

Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu acknowledged the disappointment, saying the state did not have enough resources.

“If resources were available, we should be employing and recruiting up to 50,000 teachers across the country, but due to budgetary constraints, we are unable to do that."

In June 2025, the government notably said it had wanted to recruit 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff.

Iddrisu also assured that the recruitment process had been conducted transparently.

To deal with the pedagogy gaps, the minister said the government would roll out a digital education policy.

3News reported that he was speaking during the launch of the communications briefing of the 19th edition of the eLearning Africa Conference on April 14.

UK publishes list of teaching jobs

The UK has acknowledged the need to bring more teachers into the country and recently displayed some openings.

The UK Department of Education admitted there is a shortage of teachers for certain subjects and in some parts of the country.

In this vein, it announced the opening of teaching vacancies in a bid to address shortages in the country.

There were five types of teaching vacancies in the UK with active recruitment still ongoing.

Top of the list was Otterton Church of England Primary School, Budleigh Salterton, Devon, which announced a vacancy for a class teacher with attractive pay.

The estimated salary for the role is £32,916 – £45,351 per year.

Ghanaian teachers have been known to travel to the UK for teahing jobs. In 2023, the BBC reported that over 10,000 Ghanaian teachers moved to the UK.

Teacher delights as he relocates to Canada

In line with teaching jobs abroad, a Ghanaian teacher, who relocated to Canada, opened up about his time in the North American country and used his experience to motivate others desirous of travelling abroad.

In an interview, the young man stated that his decision to relocate was premised on the hardship he was facing in the country, citing how he had to borrow to fund his income because his salary was insufficient to support him and his family.

Teacher in US worried over ICE raids

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that a Ghanaian teacher in the US has spoken in the wake of the ongoing crackdown on illegal migrants in the country.

In a video on YouTube, he said ongoing raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had negatively affected his work as a teacher.

According to him, the threat of deportation has brought fear to many migrants, especially Hispanics, who now choose to stay indoors for fear of being apprehended and deported.
