Who was former Savelugu MP Abdul-Samed Gunu?
Abdul-Samed Gunu, born on April 6, 1996, was a prominent Ghanaian politician associated with the main opposition party, the NPP.
The politician was reportedly a married man with eight children.
He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for his hometown, the Savelugu constituency, in the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana from 2017 to 2021 after securing victory in the 2016 general elections.
Gunu lost his seat and re-election bid in the 2020 general election against the current MP, Jacob Iddriss Abdulai.
The top NPP politician challenged the election results at Tamale High Court but was unsuccessful after his petition was dismissed.
Gunu ordered Gunu to pay 40,000 cedis to the Electoral Commission (EC) and another 20,000 cedis to his opponent.
The former Savelugu MP later contested the 2023 NPP primaries but lost to Fathiya Aziz, a former presidential staffer during the Nana Akufo-Addo-led administration.
The late Gunu was an alumna of Tamale Polytechnic, where he studied accounting, and the University for Development Studies (UDS), where he earned a master's degree in NGO and Rural Development.
