List of Rural banks in Ghana

The government of our country established rural banks for providing institutional credits to the rural dwellers of the country. There were no convenient ways for payment and savings before 1970, so the government resolved this issue by establishing rural banks in Ghana in 1976. Here is a list of the rural banks in Ghana.

History of rural banks in Ghana

The concept of the rural bank was started to boost small scale farming and helping the poor farmers. The rural dwellers had no ways to develop farming, agriculture and other non farming activities. Some rural communities had no access to the institutional credits. Due to that, they were unable to start their farming businesses. In accordance with the situation, the Ghanaian government tried to resolve the matter by providing credits in the rural areas. In 1976, the government of Ghana had established the rural banks in various regions of our country with the help of the Bank of Ghana (BOG). The main aim of the government was resolving the past issues facing the rural dwellers. They established the rural banks of Ghana back then and today these are the largest formal financial providers to the rural areas of our country. According to the several sources, the country has a total of 135 rural banks with 584 service outlets all over ten regions by the end of 2008. The RCB network is too large; it has a total of 2.8 million and 680,000 borrowers. Since the establishment, the network and the financial performance of the GCB have grown, and the services have helped a lot of farmers to start their activities.
