Nana Kwame Owusu Agyeman, the former Antoahene, has passed away at the age of 99, just one year short of reaching a full century of life.

US-based Ghanaian journalist, musician and entrepreneur Berko Akoto broke the news on Facebook on Saturday, August 8, 2026, detailing that the late chief was his uncle.

Sharing a video of the former traditional leader at an event, he wrote

"Sad to announce the death of my uncle Nana Kwame Owusu, former Antoahene. He lived to be 99; one year short of a century. Nana, damirifa due!"

What happened to the former Antoahene?

The exact circumstances leading to the demise of the former Antoahene remain unknown, with his nephew Berko failing to specify in his Facebook post.

The news of his demise drew an outpouring of sympathy from friends and followers who shared their condolences online.

Nana Kwame Owusu Agyeman's reign and destoolment

Nana Kwame Owusu Agyeman I served as Antoahene for more than two decades before Asantehene Otumfuo destooled him during a judicial hearing at the Manhyia Palace in May 2023, at which point he was 96 years old.

He was reported to have been found guilty of violating Ashanti customary procedures by appointing his nephew to take over his throne while he was still alive.

Nana Kwame Owusu was also alleged to have denigrated Otumfuo after his kinsmen and elders confronted him for not consulting the Asantehene before making his decision.

The late former Antoahene was also accused of other improper acts, including the multiple sale of lands before his destoolment from the throne.

His removal marked the end of a long and notable chapter in the history of the Antoa traditional area.
