Andre Ayew in Trouble as NAC Breda Near Eredivisie Relegation
- André Ayew is facing the real possibility of relegation with NAC Breda as the 2025/26 Eredivisie season approaches its climax
- Breda currently sits second from bottom and may need a favourable combination of results to avoid dropping out of the Dutch top flight
- The former Black Stars captain only joined the club in January and has since made 15 appearances, scoring once
- A CAF-accredited journalist believes Breda’s possible relegation could effectively bring Ayew’s stint in the Dutch Eredivisie to an end

Many expected the 36-year-old to return home and finish his career in the Ghana Premier League.
Instead, the son of Ghana legend Abedi Ayew surprised many by moving to the Netherlands.
However, what looked like a fresh chapter could now end in disappointment.
Andre Ayew faces relegation with NAC Breda
With only two matches left in the season, Breda sits 17th in the table, six points behind 16th-placed FC Volendam.
Their hopes of survival also suffered a major blow after losing an appeal linked to their defeat against Go Ahead Eagles.
Breda had argued that defender Dean James was ineligible to feature in the match and requested a replay.
But the Royal Dutch Football Association rejected the complaint before a court later upheld the federation’s decision, ruling that the FA had the authority to decide on such matters, BBC Sport reported.
The ruling leaves Breda needing a miracle to stay up. They must win both remaining matches and hope Volendam lose theirs.

In an interview with YEN.com.gh, sports journalist Stephen Zando of Luv FM explained that whether NAC Breda survive relegation or drop out of the Dutch top flight could be decisive in shaping the future of André Ayew at the club.
“Relegation changes everything for a club like Breda,” he said.
“It affects finances, squad planning and even player contracts, especially for senior players who were brought in to help stabilise the team.”
Zando noted that Ayew’s future is closely tied to the club’s league status, stressing that continuity is more likely if they stay up.
“If Breda remain in the Eredivisie, there is a strong case for keeping experienced players like Ayew because of the value they bring. But if they go down, it becomes very difficult to see him continuing at that level in the Netherlands,” he explained.
He further highlighted the financial realities that come with relegation, pointing out that restructuring often forces difficult decisions.
“Clubs reassess everything after relegation. High-profile or experienced players are usually among the first to be considered because of wage demands and long-term rebuilding plans,” he added.
Despite Breda’s struggles, Zando believes Ayew’s influence has remained significant.
“He brings a winning mentality and leadership, but football is results-driven. If results don’t improve, both the club and the player may eventually have to make tough decisions,” he concluded.
Ayew's Black Stars hopes suffer setback
For Ayew, relegation would represent another frustrating chapter late in his career.
The former Olympique de Marseille star had hoped his move to Breda would help revive his career and possibly put him back into the thinking of new Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Instead, Breda’s struggles have made that task even more difficult.
Watch Ayew's solitary goal for NAC Breda, as shared on X:
Since arriving in January 2026, Ayew has scored just once in 15 appearances, playing 769 minutes in total.
According to Transfermarkt, he has started seven games and come off the bench eight times.
Should Breda go down, it would mark the second relegation of Ayew’s career after previously suffering the drop with Swansea City during the 2017/18 Premier League season.
With his contract due to expire at the end of the campaign, questions are already growing over where the former Black Stars captain could play next.
For now, though, Ayew and his teammates remain focused on pulling off what would be a remarkable escape from relegation.
Jordan Ayew suffers relegation with Leicester
In a related publication, YEN.com.gh reported that Jordan Ayew suffered relegation with Leicester City.
While André Ayew and NAC Breda still have a slim survival chance, Leicester’s fate was confirmed after a 2-2 draw against Hull City ended their hopes of staying up.
