Microsoft on Friday announced it was retiring Skype, the online voice and video call pioneer that the tech titan acquired in 2011. Online auction site eBay acquired Skype in 2005 for approximately $2.6 billion, but the expected synergies never panned out, and in 2009, eBay sold a majority stake to a group of investors, who then sold it to Microsoft.

The Federal Reserve's preferred inflation measure cooled slightly in January, according to government data published Friday, although it remained stuck above the bank's long-term target. While inflation has remained stuck above the bank's long-term two percent target, economic growth has remained robust, and the labor market has stayed healthy, with unemployment hugging close to historic lows.

Beavers will soon be released into waterways in England under a new scheme launched on Friday, signalling a return to the wild for an animal once hunted to extinction. Each project would need to supply a 10-year plan to support the animals' return to the wild, while the government has also promised help for farmers who make space for beavers on their land.
