Gyan grew up in Accra and attended the Seven Great Princess Academy in Dansoman. He later joined the Accra Academy for his secondary education.


Asamoah Gyan's parents are Baffour Gyan Mensah and Cecilia Amaoko. He is the younger brother of Baffour Gyan, also a former Ghana international.
