US unemployment has stayed low despite rising interest rates and easing inflation, representing a "hopeful sign" that consumer prices can come down without a significant downturn, a Federal Reserve official said Tuesday. "I take this as a hopeful sign that we can succeed in lowering inflation without a significant economic downturn," she added.

The French government on Tuesday announced plans to raise the retirement age to 64 and streamline the pension system, setting the stage for a major showdown with trade unions and a new wave of protests. Boeing accelerated the pace of commercial plane deliveries in the fourth quarter, but again lagged arch-rival Airbus for all of 2022, according to company data released Tuesday. Boeing has badly lagged Airbus in deliveries in recent years, and in 2022 it once again fell short of the European planemaker, which said Tuesday it had delivered 661 planes to airlines and other clients last year.
