ExxonMobil is slowing medium-term investments in low-carbon ventures by some $10 billion compared with its outlook a year ago, the oil giant announced Tuesday. Under either investment scenario, the low-carbon ventures represent a small percentage in the company's overall capital budget, which is still heavily tilted towards conventional fossil fuels.

Canada on Tuesday launched a CAN$1.7 billion ($1.2 billion) program to recruit leading global researchers, part of the effort to poach intellectual talent looking to leave the United States because of President Donald Trump's policies. Canada's federal government has now joined this effort, in what it called "one of the largest recruitment programs of its kind globally."

The US Supreme Court heard arguments on Tuesday in a Republican challenge to campaign finance rules that could impact next year's midterm elections. It was unclear during oral arguments on Tuesday how the court would rule although several of the six conservative justices on the nine-member court appeared inclined to strike down the restrictions.
